Henninger Health Professions students enjoyed a special visit to Upstate Medical University as part of the P-TECH program’s health care coaching kick-off.
During a half-day visit to Upstate, the students heard from Upstate Health Coaches, learned about the Upstate admissions process and heard from an Upstate student panel – including Henninger alumna Tiffany Mateo, who is now an Upstate Medical student!
“It was informational,” freshman Kristen Nguyen said of the panel. “They taught us about the different aspects of the medical field that we could pursue, like being a physician’s assistant or a physical therapist. I might want to pursue one of those options in the future, and they shared what the classes are like and what it would be like if I did. I’m excited to work with our Upstate mentors this year, because I am hoping they will help teach me more about what I could do in the future.”
“It offered us lots of opportunities that we can pursue and they told us how we can get there,” freshman Alice Niyogusenga added. “Most places just tell you: you can be a doctor. But at Upstate, they told us the path we can take and the classes we will need... how we can get there. I like the sound of the phlebotomy class, because I’m interested in studying chromosomes and blood. I’d like to become a trauma surgeon in the Army one day, so I hope I’ll be able to intern at a hospital to learn more.”
Students also had the opportunity to view a brain anatomy demonstration, try out physical therapy equipment, tour Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Behavior Analysis Studies, Physician Assistant Studies and more.
“We learned so much on the trip last year, so I was excited to go back again this year,” sophomore Mina Rashid said. “We got to see a human heart and liver and saw how smoking impacts those organs. The trip opened my mind to the possibilities that I could pursue in the future. I’m interested in becoming a pediatrician, but they also suggested other programs that I might like.”
Beginning this month, Henninger Health Professions students have another exciting opportunity: they begin meeting monthly with Upstate career coaches. Thank you to Upstate Medical University for being such a valuable partner and for helping our scholars become #SCSDCareerReady!
