SCSD Students Attend NSBE National Convention

Students from Clary, Corcoran, Ed Smith, ELMS, Grant, Henninger, Huntington, HW Smith, ITC, Nottingham, PSLA and Roberts recently attended the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) National Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. There, they had the opportunity to compete in hands-on engineering and science activities, hear speakers and take part in workshops to help expose them to the possibilities of a career in engineering.
Many were recognized with honors, as our students won in six events! The middle school Math team: Morgan Burke (Grant), Kiamesha McMillian (Roberts), Chris O'Brien (Grant) and Cori Suressi (Grant) finished fourth, but Morgan Burke took the top award, Overall National Champion Highest Scoring Individual. The Vex Robotics team: Anita Khamtan (P-Tech), Breonna Bell (Nottingham), Rainah Barnes (Henninger), Jahzlon Bruner (Nottingham) and Zaire Robinson (Nottingham) won the Judge's Award. The First Lego League team: Matthew Johnson (Huntington), Emiliano Beardall (Ed Smith) and Angel Mensah (Clary) won the Research Award. Kidwind team Tydre Bell (Nottingham), Aidaruus Shirwa (Nottingham) and Markell Miller (Henninger) won third place, and HW Smith’s Angela Kumah won first place in Poster Display and Oral Presentation and second place overall. Malik Robinson (Nottingham) won 1st place Abstract and Overall. Congratulations to all of our hardworking students and thank you to staff members Ken Baxter, Gwen Raeford, Lessie Williams and Mark Mason for supporting the students as they competed!
